ARE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW INTERESTED IN
BECOMING A CERTIFIED BABYSITTER?

The United Phoenix Fire Fighter Association holds Babysitter Certification classes at local community centers throughout the valley.  Classes can also be arranged for large groups at different locations if desired.  This class is geared toward youths starting and the age of 11 and up. The students will learn the ins and outs of babysitting along with CPR, what to do in choking emergencies and 1st aid training.  Our goal is to not only help babysitters keep the children they watch safe, but to keep themselves safe as well.   Please contact Jill Healey at jhealey@L493.org with questions or for more information on registering or setting up a class.

HISTORY OF SAVE R KIDS

The Pool Fence Program was established in 2001, after over 50 children drown in the valley that summer. The United Phoenix Fire Fighter Community Charities along with many other organizations in a combined effort developed The Pool Fence Program, which provides pool fences to  families in need, due to hardships or special circumstances. From 2001 to present the program has installed over 800 pool fences and is responsible for saving countless lives. We will continue our efforts until every child is safe.

Sincerely,

Russ Kirk

Director of Community Programs

TIPS

Adult supervision is the best prevention against drowning.

Never leave a child unattended by a bathtub, lake, pond, canal or other sources of water.

About 25 children in the U.S. die each year of drowning in a bucket. Never leave buckets of water unattended.

Safety latches for toilets are recommended.

A pool or spa should be barricaded by a fence with locks.

Don't drink alcohol around water.

Never swim in canals - canal sides are extremely slick, which makes it difficult to get out

Keep lifesaving devices by the pool, such as a pole or a flotation device.

Check placement of doggie doors for direct access to the pool area.

Teach children to swim. But remember that even if children can swim, they are still susceptible to drowning.

FILL THE BOOT

In the fall of every year  firefighters from the UPFFA volunteer their time in our annual "Fill the Boot" drive. All money raised during this campaign goes directly to MDA of Arizona to help Arizonans impacted by neuromuscular disease enjoy a better quality of life and someday a cure. Between 2009 and 2013 the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association "Fill the Boot" drive raised more than $650,000. Last year with the generous donations of our community this drive raised over $160,000! This year our organization hopes to continue to improve on this great event. Our 2015 drive will have a kickoff event on Friday, March 20, 2015 and we will be raising money at valley Fry's locations March 21st, 28th, and April 4th.
